These are some of the most common reasons why motorists find themselves in this situation:

  • You may have actually put the wrong key in the ignition. While you might think that this is unreasonable, we assure you that we see this more times than you can imagine. Despite the difficulty that a person might experience getting the key in the ignition, it eventually fits. When it does, they go on using the key despite what they have to do to get it into the ignition. If this sounds like you then look at the key to make sure you are using the correct key if you don’t want your key eventually getting stuck in the ignition.
  • If you have a dead vehicle battery then you may experience this problem, as it will hold onto your key until the batter has been changed or is charged.
  • When you use a key that has ben cut incorrectly, you will experience a problem with the key becoming stuck in the ignition. It doesn’t matter how minor the imperfection is in the key, you will eventually experience a problem with the key getting stuck.
  • Putting the key inside the ignition incorrectly will also result in this problem. Even if it goes in the ignition at the slightest angle, it could get stuck and prevent you from removing it.
  • Dirt and debris that has built up over time could prevent your key from sliding out of the ignition.
  • There might be a transmission sensor that is not working correctly. If this happens then it won’t be easy for you to remove the key from the ignition. This problem often occurs when the signal is not reaching the column lock feature.
  • The ignition may have some internal damages that we can’t detect from the outside. We have to look inside the ignition to determine exactly what the problem is. There might be a problem with the tumbler bind or the springs, which we could easily resolve for you.
  • The wheel lock cylinder might be worn out. This will require a new one to be installed so that you can remove the key.
  • A loose cable in your dashboard could be the problem. The loose cable needs to be replaced before you will be able to effectively remove the key.
  • If you use an anti-theft device this could prevent you from being able to remove the key.
  • When the key breaks in the ignition then you’ll need one of our professional locksmiths to remove it from your ignition.

Don’t get discouraged because there is always a solution to any of the aforementioned problems that you might face. Below are some suggestions for safely and effectively removing the key from the ignition.

  1. . Check to be sure that the key is in the right position. If you notice that it is not in the PARK position then it will be impossible for you to take the key out. Even when you think you’ve put the key in correctly, a worn cylinder might make you turn the key too much. This will often occur when someone has keys on a keychain that is too heavy. The weight is what causes too much pressure on the cylinder. This is only one of the reasons why we suggest that you never carry too many keys on one key chain. If you notice the position of the key and it isn’t in the PARK position then slightly rotate your key to get it in the right position.
  2. One of the most practical things to check to ensure that the problem can be quickly resolved is to make sure your vehicle battery is not dead. This is the first thing that one of our locksmiths or an auto mechanic will do upon arrival to your location. If the battery is dead, they will jump it or need to replace it entirely so that you can get the key out.
  3. If your steering column is locked the ignition switch will hold on to the key and it will be difficult to remove it from the ignition. Pulling on the key too much will only contribute to the problem. You will want to try to slide the key out without stripping the ignition. You can do this effectively by gently pulling the key toward you while slightly turning the steering wheel. By turning the wheel while pulling the key, you may be able to unlock the steering wheel. If it doesn’t release the key then stop what you are doing and give us a call to unlock the steering wheel and remove your key.
  4. If you key your key and ignition lubricated, you may be able to avoid experiencing this problem. Just spray a little electrical cleaner in the ignition. This should loosen the key and allow you to easily slide the key out. If you are still not able to effectively remove the key, don’t force it;
